A Short History of First Baptist Church of Madison Alabama

The First Baptist Church, originally named the Madison Baptist Church, has been an integral part of the history of Madison since its beginning in the early 1880's. The church held its first meetings once a month in a Masonic Hall that stood on the west side of Sullivan Street. The first church building was erected in the mid-1880's on the present-day site of the church, with the building facing Sullivan Street. By 1892, a membership of 36 was reported.

In the early years Sunday School was held in the morning, and the worship service was held in the afternoon. The pastor of the First Baptist Church, Huntsville, would preach at the afternoon service.

Some important 'firsts' for the church include the following:

  1. First full-time pastor called in 1944.
  2. First Vacation Bible School held in 1946.
  3. Women's Missionary Society organized in 1923-1924.
The name of the church was officially changed in the 1960's to First Baptist Church of Madison. The present membership of the church is 536 resident members.

The original First Baptist Church structure was moved to the 19th century Historic Park located on the grounds of Burritt Museum. For more information about the Historic Park visit
